Barcelona is a magical city with so many monuments and architectonically well served that will make you feel like you deserve to be here. There are a lot of locations, mostly prepared for the tourists in Barcelona that will take you on a trip to the past, and some others will just leave you breathless with the views and the vibe.

A pretty awesome example of this is Montjuic, but what is Montjuic? I bet you are wondering at this point. Well, Montjuic is a mountain in Barcelona that can’t be missed while visiting the city. It’s like a compound of different places with different kinds of interests, like art, sports, outdoor activities, and history.

Where is vMontjuic located, and how can I access it?

Montjuic is located near Plaça d’Espanya or Plaza de España in Spanish. It’s in the same city, so it’s not a long ride from Barcelona city center, for example, it’s within walking distance from the metro station. To be more specific, the mountain is located towards the south of the city.

There are few ways to get there, by metro until Poble Sec Station and then take the funicular to the Montjuic Cable Car Station and here you have two choices, continue in the Cable Car which is a different price and not included in your Metro Card or leave the station and walk around, which is also a nice promenade. In this part are the main attractions, it is not necessary to go to the top to visit the Montjuic Olympic Stadium or The Calatrava Tower or even the gardens, because at the top of the mountain is the Castle, the rest of the attractions are on a lower level.

Another way to get up into Montjuic is from Plaza de España to take the Bus 150 which goes right next to Montjuic Castle. You can buy a ticket at the metro stations, and it won’t take you a lot of time to do it!

What to do in Montjuic?

Montjuic is a perfect place for those who are looking for activities in Barcelona. There’s almost no limit to what you can do there…I’ve exaggerated here, there are some limits of course, but it’s an enormous compound of many monuments and buildings to visit with different activities to do.

Montjuic is not only important for Barcelona’s tourists, but it also is pretty important for the people who live in the city. There are museums, a cemetery, gorgeous gardens that will steal your attention when you see them.

The mountain is also an important location for sports, so it has the best of different worlds. It has many outdoor areas to practice sports, mainly running and riding bikes, because of the extension and the large areas and as we mentioned cultural interest sites.

Montjuic Green areas

Montjuic has a lot of gardens that are perfect for people who want to visit Barcelona and its green areas, perfect for picnics. Most of them were created during the 20th century, and the idea to begin the project was from Josep Amargós, but he couldn’t finish it.

Years passed by and it was not until 1917 that the true gardening project began. This time the one in charge was Jean-Claude Nicolas Forestier, a french landscaper, who worked alongside Nicolau Maria Rubió i Tuduri, who was the director of Parks & Gardens of Barcelona.

The gardens that people can see while visiting Montjuic have an important and marked classicist and Mediterranean style. Most of the gardens are accompanied by pergolas and terraces, making them more attractive for tourists.

But, if people take a deeper look at Montjuic gardens, they will realize that there are some with a different style. For example, Laribal Garden has a Hispano-Arabic style while also keeping the terraces, pergolas, fountains, and squares.

Something important to mention is that fountains from this garden end up in the Theatre Grec, making it more beautiful than it already is.

Maybe the most important place when talking about gardens, is the Historical Botanic Garden of Barcelona, which is located behind the Nacional Palau. As we can see, the Montjuic gardens are quite impressive.
